Every June, a corner of northwest China turns purple. Not a few potted plants or a modest garden bed — an entire valley, stretching to the snow-capped Tianshan Mountains, blooming in waves of lavender so dense they look like a satellite photo of Provence. This is Huocheng County in Xinjiang's Ili River Valley, sitting at exactly the same latitude as southern France: 44 degrees north. And unlike Provence, you won't be fighting tour buses for a clear photograph.
China's lavender industry was born here in the 1960s when French seeds were first planted as an experiment. Today, Huocheng produces over 90% of China's lavender, and the fields have become one of the most photogenic — and underrated — travel experiences in the country.

When to Go
Mid-June to early July is the absolute peak. The first flowering season produces the most vibrant purple and the strongest fragrance. If you're planning your entire Xinjiang trip around lavender, this is the window. It also coincides perfectly with the opening of the Duku Highway (June 1), making a combined itinerary seamless.
Late July to mid-August brings a second, slightly less intense bloom after the first harvest. Colors are still beautiful, crowds are thinner, and the weather is warmer. Some photographers actually prefer this period because the fields are less trampled.
September to early October sees a small autumn bloom. Not the full spectacle of June, but enough to photograph, and the valley's autumn foliage adds golden contrast.
Where to See the Lavender
Jieyou Princess Farm
The most visited and well-organized site. Clearly marked paths, designated photography platforms, and a small lavender museum explaining the history of cultivation. Entry: 35 CNY. Best for first-time visitors who want a curated experience.
Huanghuang Village Fields
Smaller, more rustic, and often free (some farmers charge a 10 CNY photo fee). The advantage is authenticity — you're walking among working farms, not tourist displays. Fewer crowds, better for intimate photography.
Tianshan Flower Sea
A larger agricultural park combining lavender with sunflowers, rapeseed flowers, and other seasonal blooms. Entry: 60 CNY. Best if you want variety beyond lavender alone. The mountain backdrop here is dramatic.
How to Get There
From Urumqi by train: Take the high-speed train to Yining (5 hours, ~200 CNY second class). From Yining, hire a private car or take a taxi to Huocheng — approximately 1.5 hours.
By air: Yining Airport (YIN) has flights from Urumqi (1 hour), Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. From the airport, Huocheng is 1.5 hours by car.
By car (Duku Highway combo): If you're driving the Duku Highway, Huocheng is a natural detour. From Nalati Grassland, it's roughly 3 hours by car. This combination — Duku Highway → lavender fields → Sayram Lake — is the most popular summer route in Xinjiang.
Photography Tips
Wear white or light colors. Purple fields + white dress is the classic combination. Avoid wearing purple — you'll blend into the background.
Shoot at golden hour. The hour before sunset produces the richest purple saturation and the softest light. Midday sun washes out the color.
Get low. Crouch or lie at the edge of a row so the lavender fills your entire foreground with the Tianshan mountains in the background.
Drone photography. Drones are generally permitted in the fields. A top-down shot of the purple grid patterns is stunning. Fly in the evening for warm light.

Temperature swings — Ili Valley sits at about 600–800 meters elevation. June days are warm (25–30°C) but nights can drop to 10°C. Pack layers.
UV protection — Despite the moderate temperatures, UV radiation is strong. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are essential, especially during long photography sessions in the fields.
Bees — Lavender fields are alive with bees. They don't typically sting unless provoked, but if you're allergic, carry your EpiPen and avoid walking deep into the rows.
Essential oil souvenirs — Huocheng produces excellent lavender essential oil, sachets, and dried flower bundles. Farm shop prices are far cheaper than tourist stores. A 10ml bottle of pure oil runs 30–80 CNY.
